Opting out

When you give your name and address to an organisation, that organisation may pass the information on to someone else. You should be told this on the form you have filled in and, ideally, be given the opportunity to "opt-out". The "opt-out" box (or some other way to make your wishes known) may appear on order forms, competition entry forms, surveys, etc. You can tick it to say that you do not wish to have your information passed on to other companies.

You may see this symbol:

which was developed by the Information Commissioner and the National Consumer Council so that data subjects, (that's you!) can tell at a glance that personal information about them is being collected and processed.
