NotificationThe Information Commissioner maintains a public register of data controllers. Notification is the process by which a data controller's details are added to the register. You can see the register at the Commissioner’s office and it is available on the internet (http://www.dataprotection.gov.uk). A register entry only shows what a data controller has told the Commissioner about the type of data being processed. It doesn’t name the people they hold information about. The Data Protection Act requires every data controller who is processing personal data to notify unless they are exempt. (See Exemptions from notification by data controllers.) Failure to notify is a criminal offence. |
